Temperatures and clothing by season
| Season | Average temperature (approx.) | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | About 6°C (43°F) in March, 18°C (64°F) in May | A winter coat in March; light jacket or cardigan in April–May |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 23–26°C (73–79°F); highs often above 30°C (86°F) | Light clothes, a layer for air-conditioning, rain gear |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | About 22°C (72°F) in September, 8°C (46°F) in November | Light layers in September–October, a coat in November |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | −2 to 1°C (28–34°F); nights can approach −10°C (14°F) | Down coat, gloves, scarf and hat |
Spring: cherry blossoms and yellow dust
Cherry blossoms usually bloom in early April, drawing crowds to Yeouido and Seokchon Lake. Days can be mild while mornings and evenings stay cool, so dress in layers.
Spring also brings days of yellow dust and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). If you are sensitive to it, pack a mask and check air quality in a weather app.
Summer: monsoon and humidity
The rainy season (jangma) usually runs from late June to late July, with short, heavy downpours. August is hot and humid with strong sun, so bring a hat and sunscreen.
Subways, department stores and cafés are strongly air-conditioned, so carry a light layer. On rainy days, plan indoor spots such as The Hyundai Seoul, COEX or the National Museum of Korea.
Autumn: the most comfortable season
From late September through October the weather is mostly clear and dry — ideal for sightseeing. Autumn leaves peak at the palaces and on Namsan from late October to early November.
Temperatures can drop sharply in November, so pack a warm coat for late-autumn trips.
Winter: dress for real cold
Seoul winters are cold, with lows that can approach −10°C (14°F). Wind off the Han River makes it feel colder still, so a down coat, gloves and a hat that covers your ears are worth packing.
Indoors, underfloor heating (ondol) keeps buildings warm, so wear layers you can take off. The air is very dry — bring moisturiser and lip balm.
Fares and times are estimates as of 2026-10 and may change. Check official sources for the latest information.
