eSIM: the easiest option

An eSIM adds a data plan to your phone through a QR code or app, with no card to swap. Buy and install it before you leave, then switch it on when you land. Plans for a few days are inexpensive, which makes this the best balance of cost and convenience for most travellers.

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not include a Korean phone number.

SIM card

Korean mobile carriers have counters in the arrivals halls at Incheon and Gimpo, where you can buy a tourist SIM with your passport. A plan with a Korean number is useful for restaurant bookings and services that verify by text message.

Keep your home SIM somewhere safe while it is out of your phone.

Pocket Wi-Fi

One device connects several people, so it keeps the cost per person down for families and groups. Reserve ahead, pick it up at the airport and return it when you leave. You will carry it all day, so a power bank helps.

Free Wi-Fi and roaming

Seoul's free public Wi-Fi is available in subway stations and trains, parks and major squares, and cafés and hotels have Wi-Fi too — but it is patchy for following a map on the move.

Roaming with your home carrier needs no setup but is usually pricier. Some plans include overseas data, so check yours before you go.

FAQ

Do I need a Korean phone number?

Not for sightseeing. Maps, translation and taxi apps all work with data only. Choose a SIM with a number if you need to make local bookings.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Buy and install it before you leave home, then switch it on after landing so you are not rushing at the airport.
